If it's right, what I catched from your brief is that you are looking for something iconic or something represent your team. And if you don't want a logo just a font, may I know something you and your team like, such as an animal (e.g. tiger, bear, etc.) or something has a strong character and represent the team except military's scope (e.g. pirates, indian, technology, etc.). So i can try to make an artwork that closer to what you are looking for.
