Poster Design Brief

"The Duck Diaries: A Cold War Quest for Friendship Across the Americas" is a feature documentary about a goodwill road trip made by seven young guys aboard a surplus military amphibious vehicle (a Duck), starting in New York and going through Central and South America, at the height of the Cold War in 1961-1962. If useful to you, you may view excerpts of the film at www.thevaliantduck.com. A trailer is at http://www.matttwomeyworks.com/reel.html.

The title takes inspiration from "The Motorcycle Diaries," and I like that as a starting point for the poster illustration as well (see Motorcycle Diaries poster image here: http://high5perspectives.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/371.jpg ).

Instead of a front view of two riding a motorcycle, this will take a front (slightly angled) view of their vehicle, with the Donald Duck painting on front clearly visible, and with seven guys seen aboard the vehicle, plus a German shepherd (could be aboard or running alongside). Features: One is holding oars that stick out, pretending to row (though the vehicle is on land); one is playing guitar; one is holding a basketball; one could be kind of hanging off the side, but that's optional.

Size: 16 inches (wide) by 20 inches (high).

I was limited to 5 uploads here. ADDITIONAL IMAGES may be found at http://www.thevaliantduck.com/supplemental-images.html

There are other, optional elements (see "Nice to Have").

Updates

I'm now committed to pay the winner, and I've sweetened the pot by $100. It's because I appreciate that the direction I've given is a lot, and the illustration must be done with care.

SUPPLEMENTAL IMAGES related to this design contest are now available at http://www.thevaliantduck.com/supplemental-images.html. (DesignCrowd allows only 5 uploads; otherwise I would have included them sooner.)

As some of you have discovered, in addition to the excerpts at www.thevaliantduck.com, a trailer is viewable here: http://www.matttwomeyworks.com/reel.html

Thanks for your efforts!

Project Deadline Extended
Reason: I like some of the work I've been seeing. I would encourage someone to do a hand-drawn version based on my "must haves" and my crude sketch. I'm certainly not ruling out composites-some are looking pretty good.
Added Friday, May 17, 2013

I have extended the deadline by 8 days and am now offering 2nd place prize of $130. Good Luck!

Requirements
Must have
  • (1) The vehicle (find additional reference images by doing Google images search for DUKW), (2) the 7 guys aboard, (3) the German shepherd (aboard or running alongside), (4) the oars pretend-rowing, (5) one of the guys playing guitar, and (6) one at the wheel (the steering wheel may or may not be visible). Also, (6) the Donald Duck painting on the vehicle. And (7) the title: "The Duck Diaries: A Cold War Quest for Friendship Across the Americas" (the subtitle can be much less prominent than "The Duck Diaries.") NEW: (9) A film by Matt Twomey.
Nice to have
  • There is a postage stamp and postal mark visual motif that runs through this film. Therefore, I would also like a border like that of postage stamp, and postal marks from New York; Mexico City; Alajuela, Costa Rica; Panama City; Barranquilla, Colombia; Lima, Peru; Santiago, Chile; and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. See attachment Duckposterreference for a very rough idea.

Less critical optional elements: A basketball.
Also optional, depending on whether they work or not: Looming, perhaps semi-transparent images of John F. Kennedy and (1961-era) Fidel Castro. Also optional, a map of North and South America, showing the route of the trip (see attached image for reference).
