the little taqueria - T-Shirt Illustration
We're looking for an illustration for a T-shirt for not only staff to wear but possibly sell as merchandise. We're hoping the illustration can be also used as part of our branding, on our website and maybe even our van itself.
We love Mexican art, especially the Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros murals and wanted to draw a little on this. We'd like an illustration of a street food scene with historic figures serving the food. We're after them all serving authentic food, from their respective countries and from different food setups (mobile bbq, gazebo, lemonade stand etc). I've attached two images i've found of similar things and am looking for a bit of a cross between the two. We're going for a bit of a "threadless.com" look for our t-shirts rather than in-your-face branding.
The branding we'd like to be quite subtle. In the middle of the scene we'd like our van complete with our name and maybe our logo/emblem in the bottom corner of the t-shirt and leave the branding at that. (both attached).
For the person, food, vehicle please see below:
Frida Kahlo - Quesadillas - from a gazebo market stall
Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa - Tortas (sandwiches) from a hot-dog type cart
Us (the little taqueria) - serving tacos from our van.
Augusto Cesar Sandino - BBQ'ed Corn on the cob from a little mobile bbq on wheels
Montezuma (aztec ruler) - serving tequila and mezcal from behind a barrel.
I've also cobbled together a little example (try not to laugh too much!) of the sort of thing i'm looking for. But obviously all in keeping with each other and a bit of context and detail in the scene itself would be good.
All of the figures have pretty defining features (like frida kahlo's eyebrow(s)) so hopefully it won't need massive amounts of detail for it to be obvious who they are and please feel free to do what i have done with the signage to make it even more obvious!
Black and white is fine, similar to the tequila label scene attached but maybe we could have our van the only thing in colour to make it stand out. I'd prefer a sketchy illustrated type style like the tequila label or painted style like the rivera and siqueiros murals rather than the more 'graphic design' look of the other street food scene.
The design needs to work on the T-shirts (we're thinking probably green or cream coloured shirts) but also on other mediums such at our website and flyers/posters etc. If each of the individual figures selling food works also in isolation that would be fantastic but not essential.
Updates
Project Deadline Extended
Reason: This has been extended at request of Design Crowd. We received a lot of designs that involved a mixture of stock images rather than the illustration that we requested. We are happy for people to resubmit designs but please make sure they are illustrations and you understand and read the brief fully.

Requirements
Must have
- All the historical figures selling their respective foods. Must be an illustration. The font for our name is called "playball"(cream) and the tagline is "special elite"(brown).
- the little taqueria
- Mexican and central american street food
- (don't worry if the tagline is too small to read on the t-shirt so long as when the image is blown up large for a poster or something it works).
Nice to have
- Each historical figure possible to work as a standalone illustration.
- Illustration in grayscale apart from our van in colour.
Should not have
- In-your-face branding.
