Book Cover Design Brief

I need an ebook cover and print book cover for the first episode in a humorous, action-filled space adventure called Space Detective. Here's a rough blurb for a flavour of the book:

Twenty-something Carrie Hatchett has not made much of a success of her life, and her ex-boyfriend's accusation that she never pays attention may carry some truth. But all that is about to change when Carrie is sucked into a mysterious green mist that appears beneath her kitchen sink.

Encountering a terrifying insectoid alien sets Carrie on the path to a fast-paced space adventure that tests her concentration, fighting abilities and skills of deduction. The Transgalactic Council hires her to investigate a conflict between the mechanical placktoids and the mysterious oootoon, a single entity comprising billions in individual personalities.

Drawn into the adventure is Carrie's steady, level-headed work colleague, Dave, who reveals he has a secret vice and an impulsive nature when pushed too far.

In uncovering the true aggressor in the conflict between the placktoids and oootoon, Carrie and Dave reveal a threat to the entire galaxy.

Beta readers have described the feel of the book as a cross between Dr.Who and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

There is a space ship in the story, but it's pitch black, so may not be a good fit for the cover. The green mist is central to the series, and my initial thoughts are to have the title in silver and shaped like a space ship, disappearing into a spiral of green mist set against an outer space background - disappearing in a similar way that the Tardis disappears down its vortex, or the preface words disappear into space at the beginning of Star Wars.

While the book is humorous, the emphasis for the cover should be the fast-paced space adventure aspect. Branding is important. I'm planning at least four in the series while waiting to see if it gains traction.

The title should read Space Detective and the subtitle is Episode One: Mission Improbable. My pen name is J.J. Green.
