MileStomper will be a training site for runners (and eventually swimmers and cyclists), and their clubs and teams. Our temporary landing page is at http://milestomper.com.
Our focus is on uncompromising training tools for serious runners, clubs, and teams, suitable for use by novices and elite athletes training for races from the 5-K to the Marathon.
I don't want anything too "on the nose", as I'm looking for something a little more distinctive than a stylized runner. As you can see on the milestomper.com page, I'm currently using a footprint. So please reference that page to see where we're at, but also don't be afraid to take a leap. We have no preconceived notions at this point.
But we would like to think that we're bringing in the next generation of training tools, so something with a bit of attitude, a little edge, or boldness would seem to fit. Think Nike+, but less commercial and more universal.
I would prefer a design suitable for the following uses (or at least adaptable to them):
** website masthead logo (looks good within 200x100 pixels)
** looks good in white or black
** looks good on a t-shirt (high res)
As an example of what we like, take a look at the logos of outdoor apparel/equipment companies like North Face, Marmut, Patagonia, theclymb.com, and backcountry.com. Feel free also to go with more of a Wordmark approach over Pictorial/Combination logos if there's an interesting way to stylize the font/name.
I would also hope that the design would be done in a vector format, so that it could be scaled up to be used in t-shirt printing and scaled down for the website.
Updates
Some of the brands we would like to be associated with, and look on par with, are outdoor brands like Patagonia, North Face, Marmot, etc.

Another idea that I might like is to focus on an abstract representation of a big and fast animal. The first one that came to mind was a rhinoceros. I guess this would be more of a mascot-type logo. My reasoning is that the "Stomper" in our name makes me think of a larger animal. But we don't want a slow animal, because we're a site about running fast.
