Logo Design Brief

I need a logo for a niche travel blog - Mechtraveller.com

The blog is about geeky travel. It will reflect my own interests in the mechanical, technical, historical, engineering and military world. It's about visiting brand museums, battlefield sites, technical museums, airshows, factory tours, transport, engineering sites, etc.

The blog already exists. It is under leisurely construction for a 'soft' launch. You can see where (black header panel, top left) I need the logo to go. Scaled versions of it will also need to appear in other parts of the site, possibly on a white background, so I'll need b/w or light/dark versions.

I'm torn between a retro/vintage style badge logo (more likely) or a mascot logo (if not too naff), but I'm open to ideas, which is why I'm crowdsourcing.

• A badge or other style logo would probably feature gear wheels, cogs, levers, dials, or somesuch. I do like Steampunk as a design style.

• A mascot logo would probably include a 'mech' character with a travel theme; so trailing a wheelie cabin bag or something, with the wording under or over..

The wording is: Alastair McKenzie's (preceding small), Mechtraveller (main large).
