Book Cover Design Brief

A Wing and a Prayer is about a Guadalupe petrel (a bird) named Lupe who may be the last of his kind. He has been taken captive by humans and hopes to escape and find a female.

The cover design should suggest both the YA audience and environmental responsibility/awareness.

It needs to be photorealistic, especially when it comes to the unique look of the Guadalupe petrel. A Guadalupe petrel must appear on the cover (not a generic sea bird but an actual Guadalupe petrel).

The cover MUST look like and be competitive with other books in the YA arena, including font choices.

Target Market(s)

Young Adult, with carryover as young as Middle Grade (8) and up to adult.

Requirements

Must have

• A Guadalupe petrel must appear on the cover (not a generic sea bird but an actual Guadalupe petrel).
• Front cover typography:

• a "1" inside some sort of circle or medallion or badge. Not large, but visible. This signifies that it's the first book in a series.

• • Final deliverable files must be in .AI (Adobe Illustrator CS6) or .PSD (Adobe Photoshop CS6) format, and all fonts must be included as separate files or embedded.
• • Final art must be minimum of 300dpi in CMYK mode
• • Final cover "total area coverage" cannot under any circumstances exceed 300% and should remain at 240% or lower.
• • Final cover must meet all requirements from template provided and will, ideally, be provided USING that template.

Nice to have

• Rocks and/or the sea, since petrels hunt over the sea. Or greenery/nest.

Should not have

• - No humans. This book is about birds.
• - No black and white. Please use color.
• - No laurels or wreaths or ribbons! Not around "25th Anniversary Edition" and not around the "1". These are not awards. They're just facts.
