Logo Design Brief
A logo is required for an established consultancy company, as part of a rebranding exercise. It is small consultancy, with an extensive track-record at the forefront of technological advances in the marine geoscience, and an extensive global network of leading strategic technology and innovation enablers and Research Groups. It works globally.
The company name is MARGIN – which is an acronym for Marine Geoscience Innovation. It provides innovative geoscience expertise with respect to exploring, mapping and understanding the seafloor environment.
Geoscience involves the disciplines of geology (the understanding of earth formation processes, rocks and sediments) and geophysics (measuring the physical property responses of the earth to understand the geology of the earth where it cannot be easily seen by the naked eye). Our workspace is within the marine environment, from the continental shelf, through to extreme deep-water environments, at plate margins (the boundaries between tectonic plates which shape the earth, its oceans and its continents – e.g. mid-ocean ridges) – which all dovetails with the acronym MARGIN.
In order to understand the seafloor geology, because it is covered in a vast amount of water, and cannot be seen unaided, understanding of the environment is achieved through use of high-end technology and techniques. MARGIN specialises in the provision of such technical expertise, being:
• Identifying appropriate existing technology (technology scanning) for understanding a particular seafloor environment.
• Undertaking research and development of bespoke technological solutions, when there is no obvious existing solution. Much of this technology relies on sophisticated robotic vehicles, which house geophysical instruments to sense or “see” the seafloor.
• Providing the necessary technical skills to acquire, assimilate, interpret, visualise and model the complex data coming from these platforms and sensors.
• Minimising geoscientific and investment risk, and steering the development and implementation of fit-for-purpose technical solutions.
The logo should communicate a high degree of technical experience, professional competence, and credibility. Key things it should also convey are the marine (seafloor) environment, a global footprint, and innovative technical solutions.
The Logo is for use on business card, letterheads and eventually a website.
Target Market(s)
The target has been mainly in the Marine minerals exploration and mining industry. This is a fairly niche industry globally, still in its infancy, but we wish to remain at the forefront of this industry and stand out from the crowd.
The key points that distinguish us from our competitors is we have been in this industry from its inception, and therefore have considerable track-record and experience.
In addition, MARGIN wishes to also try and move into industries which have similar parallel technical requirements, some of which considerably more well-established than the marine minerals industry, but which may benefit from some of the innovative approaches we have adopted. These industries would include, but not be limited to:
• Oil and gas market – site survey investigation for pipelines, cable routes, rig installations,
• Offshore renewal energy industry (wind farms)
• Government natural resource agencies

Must have
- Colours should be simple, clean and eye-catching and should convey the marine (seafloor) environment – deep blues , different shades of blue or greens.
- We wish to have a logo with word placement beneath or next to it which states MARGIN – Marine Geoscience Innovation. It should be in clear print that coveys a modern technological capability.
- The logo should be simple and clean/clear. It can be abstract – as long as this unambiguously conveys the marine (seafloor) environment, a global footprint, and innovative technical solutions.
Nice to have
- A maximum of 2-3 colours from chosen palette used.
- Should stand out on both light and dark backgrounds, for web, print and other promotional material.
Should not have
- No Nautical maritime logo’s – i.e. ships anchors, sails, boats etc.
- Need to ensure that company comes across as a geoscience (technical expertise and knowledge-base) Consultancy ( It is not:
- A marine ship charter company
- A marine survey company
- An equipment supplier
- A drilling company
- so please no stylised images of the above in the logo.
- We also not marine biologists – therefore no logos with whales, dolphins etc.
