The proportions of the layout illustrations are very different from the dimensions given (2.25" x 14"). A tripod size of .5" leaves only 1.75" for the plates, the spring and the rest of the image. Is that right?

Yes, the proportions of the sample are different than the desired illustrations needed for this project. The tripod could be 3/8" if that makes a big difference. Consider the 14" a maximum width, but the final should not be less that 12".
