Logo Design Brief

We need a logo design for a new global research and advisory group based in Cambridge UK. Our mission is to challenge the status quo by looking at banking and finance in non-traditional ways. For example, we go to Africa and sleep in the slums for a week to learn about microfinance in stead of merely reading about it or interviewing a few people. However, our logo has to somehow reflect the long tradition of research here in Cambridge. Our idea is to create a logo that looks like a Cambridge college, yet doesn't look like a Cambridge college (the university frowns on logos that could be mistaken for a actual college). We would like the logo to display the four phases of money/banking development: ancient times (when objects like sea shells were money), medieval times (money was gold/silver bullion or coins), renaissance times (when paper money and cheques emerged) modern times (credit cards, e-money, mobile-phone payments, virtual currencies).
