eBook Cover Design Brief
"Eight legged souls" (Achtbeinige Seelen) is a novel classified by the author as fantasy/young adult fiction. It needs a front cover for an eBook. The task will include providing the cover with the English title, the cover with the German title, and just the "plain" cover without title.
The simple motive (no background, just plain white or with some light/dark contrasts) should show a boy of around 16 (likeable, slim, bony, red messy hair, fair-skinned type, jeans, plain T-shirt without print), who has a somewhat tense posture, looking off to the distance with anticipation (can be front, back or side view). Prominantly featured towards the front (or slightly diagonal) is his shadow, which shows the outlines of a spider (8 legs should be clearly seen). Can be either color or black/white.
The story revolves around the described character above, as well as some other characters around 20 years old. They discover that rebirth is real and there is a certain amount of "soul movement" between species. Hence the shown character has the "soul" of a spider. The book then touches on the fight between the species to gain / contain control on rebirth. This as well involves a strong increase in insect population (flies, mosquitos) and certain aspects of greek mythology (especially around athena). The story takes place in Belgium and partly in Greece.
The character described above is caught between the spiders' "movement" and at the same time his own conscience (protecting innocents). He's first elated by the understanding of his background and what the spiders are working towards. But as he gradually finds out the scrupulous way of advancing the spiders' means, he pulls back. However, the don't really let him. And they have power over him, basically by threatening everything he holds dear. He is a regular guy, somewhat clumsy, but compassionate and trying to do what's right.
Style-wise, I do like covers as attached (but much simpler as described above), but am open to other ideas. The character should NOT be photo-realistic but stylized (closer to graphic novel-style).
