Book Cover Design Brief
The book is titled MARKED FOR MURDER (subtitle; A Matthew Diggerson Mystery), author: D. G. Gillespie.
Here is the synopsis which will also appear on the back cover:
“Eight years after Ocean View College’s Humanities Chairperson (Tobias Mann) was murdered, Professor Matthew Diggerson is now in that position, and history appears to be doing its repetitive thing. With one of his dogs aging and the “new” one engaging, Digger must solve the murders or become another victim.”
I would need a front cover that expresses the feel of the book. Here are some ideas from the author:
1. Crimson colored
2. Should show Snodo the main character's dog in front. Snodo should look like an all-white beagle with a pony’s white mane from the top of her head partly down her back (a beagle/wire terrier mix).
3. The book title should be higher up, and displayed on a chalkboard which also shows some writing from a "teacher" such as: Semicolon = Balance, Colon = Introduce Statement
4. A shadow of the killer should show behind our transposed on top of the front. The shadow of the killer should feature the person's hands reaching out as if to strangle someone."
The author wants a cover similar to his first book in the Matthew Diggerson mystery series which was entitled RULES TO DIE BY. I can send jpg of this book and the second in the series, but you may have some thoughts of your own which is fine.
I have a subscription with iStock.com so it would be very helpful if you would draw any images you use from their "Essentials" collection (not their "Signature" collection which I can't afford.) Once we decide on a final cover, you can just send me the ID numbers of the images you need and I will download them and send them to you.
Ultimately, I will need two things: a jpg of the front cover that is at least 1600 pixels wide for upload to Kindle. Our book covers are all 6" wide x 9" high. We will also need a full cover completed using a template from CreateSpace which I will send later that uses the front cover you design plus a spine that shows (from top to bottom) the author's name, the book title, and our logo. I will also send you our logo for your use. The back of the full cover includes the short synopsis from above which should be justified and in a readable font, and our logo in the lower left-hand corner. The lower right hand corner of the back cover is reserved for the ISBN which the printer will add later.
We don't have a very large budget for covers, but we produce quite a few on a regular basis and if we like your work and your work ethic, it could easily become an on-going relationship.
Sincerely,
Patricia Rockwell

Requirements
Must have
- 1. front cover jpg for a 6" x 9" book (1600 pixels on short side)
- 2. full cover with the design on front, title, author and our logo on spine and synopsis and logo on back cover. To be placed on a template provided by me from CreateSpace and provided to me as a pdf
- Note: I have a subscription with iStock.com using their Essentials collection so it would be very helpful if artist selected imagery from this collection. Once design is approved I will be able to download the images the artist needs from iStock and send them to the designer.
Nice to have
- See project description above.
- Our books at Cozy Cat Press are all mysteries, so we like covers to look mysterious, but they are also light so we don't want them to be too bloody or gory.
