Graphic Design Brief

The Boy and the Bottle is a 1,020-word fictional story designed for new readers.

Jimmy, a clean cut 8 year old boy, is ready for his first big walk to Grandma’s house. Anticipating his thirst, he prepares a bottle of water to bring along on his journey. Throughout his walk, Jimmy discovers all of the uses for his bottle such as carrying water, rolling dough at grandmas, and capturing a fire-fly for use as a flashlight. By the end of the story, Jimmy has collected items such as bread, a balloon, a bouquet of flowers, and of course, a bug.

I would like the illustrations to be fun and colorful. I've attached a sample of something I found browsing online-however I'm open to suggestions!

I'm looking for a few examples of how you would illustrate the boy and a sample scene. Based on the style, you'll win the book and we can discuss the exact dimensions (the book will probably by 8x8 but it's currently being explored).

This is the first time I've used this service so I don't know exactly how it works. If it's easier for you to work from a few sample pages I've included them below. When it comes to a children''s book the illustrations really tell the story so I'm hoping to break down the pages based on how the illustrator best wants to get the message across. I'm flexible.

Story:

This is Jimmy. This is his bottle. It’s not just an ordinary bottle though. This is Jimmy’s special bottle. Why is his bottle so special? Let me tell you the story.

It was a hot summer morning and Jimmy woke up excited becausehe was visiting Grandma today. He gotout of bed, stretched his arms and put on his favorite t-shirt. He brushed his teeth, washed his face andhands, and turned off the light. Hereached for a pair of pants and his most comfortable shoes because it was along walk to Grandmas.

Jimmy hurried downstairs, went to the cupboard and pickedout his favorite cereal.

When he finished his breakfast, he walked over to the sinkto wash his dishes because that’s what big boys do. As he turned to walk out the door, he saw the cereal box and empty bottleof milk still on the table. Jimmy putthe box back in the cupboard and just as he picked up the bottle to throw inthe trash, he had an idea.

“I know,” he thought.“I’ll fill this bottle with water and bring it with me in case I getthirsty.” He knew it was going to be ahot day.

He walked along the sidewalk for a while. He went down onestreet and up another until a little dog started following behind him. The dog barked at Jimmy, who turned and said,“What’s the matter little doggy?”

The dog just staredat Jimmy and barked again. Then Jimmyhad another idea. “Maybe he’s thirsty!I’ll share my water with him!” He openedhis bottle and poured a little into the palm of his hand for the littledog. The dog licked the water as fast ashe could. Before he knew it, the water was all gone and the bottle was empty again.
