Logo Design Brief

For this project I have spent a couple of weeks reviewing the portfolios of the top designers from each country. If you have received an invitation, there are 12 of you I have invited, from which will select the winner, who will then design the business card. If you have not been invited, your chance of winning is slim. Whether you have been invited or not, if you do not follow the instructions in the description, target market, and especially the Must Haves, your work will be rejected.

As I have started another company in addition to the one described in this brief, the top three designers will also be invited to the competition I will begin immediately after this one closes, and I will choose again from those three designers' submissions for a logo and business card.

Five Beyond is a startup incubator and project team building business. The site (fivebeyond.com, and especially fivebeyond.com/updates) and meetup group (meetup.com/fivebeyond) best encapsulate the mission and activities of the group.

Target Market(s)

Anyone with entrepreneurial ambitions, and this will usually be (though is not restricted to) people ranging in age from teenagers to middle-aged professionals. Unlike other incubators this is not primarily technology-restricted: Five Beyond teams should work on ventures as varied as those given at fivebeyond.com/updates/possibilities. Also, I don't intend for this to be a small business, even though it is now - this logo should look appropriate on the side of an office tower, on a letter to shareholders, on (or carved as, if 3D) block of granite at the entrance to the office park, on a currency, on a seal, on a uniform, etc.

Requirements
Must have
  • 1. Submit ONE (1) design only, with an explanation of which values of Five Beyond it embodies and how those are represented. Tell me briefly in words why your design works - you have the experience and the education, don't let me get away with picking a bad design. Give me a short explanation convincing me your design is better than the ones others will submit. The explanation could matter as much as the design; As Phil Knight told Carolyn Davidson when she designed the Nike swoosh, "Well, I don't love it, but maybe it will grow on me." - help me understand why your design should grow on me.
  • 2. The text "FIVE BEYOND" should be all uppercase. The text should be given as much design consideration as the icon, as the icon and the text should work as well if they were each used alone, as they do when put together. Designs in which the icon is just stylized letter(s) that don't convey anything about the company's values or activities, will probably be rejected.
  • 3. The icon or part of the text should should fit in a square, taking up most of the space in the square.
  • 4. The icon should be as simple as possible but no simpler. If you can show it to someone for 5-10 seconds and they can redraw it credibly from memory it is a good design. Could it even be drawn without lifting one's pencil off the paper?
  • 5. The design should convey Five Beyond's values rather than what the company actually does, although if you have a clever and SUBTLE visual pun, go for it.
  • 6. The design should remain effective if printed in one color, printed in reverse colors or grayscale, or scaled up or down.
  • 7. Use solid colors only (no gradients).
  • 8. If you flout one or more of the above "rules", let me know why in your written. I you could credibly incorporate an optical illusion or something as creative I would be impressed enough to overlook some of the above.
