Logo Design Brief
I need a logo design for my new endeavour in Melbourne called "Weld and Fathom" (or weld + fathom).
weld+fathom combines traditional techniques, wood and occasionally metal to make striking classic and contemporary pieces for commercial and home use. All items are made by hand in a back shed in the north of Melbourne.
I'm a furniture maker and the final design should communicate a maker/company that is bold, does the job, does it well, and has a strong feel but with a background of elegance and femininity to it all.
I currently focus on creating tables and cabinets, but am branching out into other furniture forms over time.
If possible, I'd like to eventually be able to make a branding iron that has the logo on it, so I can burn the logo into my furniture as a signature for the piece.
Further ideas are available in the following manifesto.
---
I have been a maker and creative my whole life. My father was a carpenter, and some of my earliest memories involve being out in the back of our house in south-east Sydney with him, sawing and sanding and creating in a shed full of tools.
I am interested in joinery, welding, recycled timber and found materials. I have a love for hand tools and use them extensively in my work. I am inspired by the resurgence of industrial furniture, the simplicity and timelessness of Danish design, the natural expression of wood, and the provenance of furniture designs and materials.
I love working with local Victorian, recycled and rescued timbers. The weathering and patterning of years of use presents a unique story to build pieces around. I also love working with new timber. Many timbers from south-east Australia are truly unique, and even the humble Douglas Fir or Mountain Ash can be turned into a beautiful piece that will last decades.
I work out of the back shed of the house in Thornbury, Melbourne that I share with my partner and son.
