Logo Design Brief

We need a logo design for a new company called "Free State Apparel" . We are looking for a logo that will be embroidered on clothing, from hats to shirts. It will also appear on marketing materials. The logo should be simple (think old country club logos). It should translate well in black and white.
The "Free State" is a section of Fauquier County, Virginia and part of the Blue Ridge mountains. The logo may be subtle, but should speak to the history/geography/wildlife/etc of the area.
Some examples: Master's logo, The Country Club Boston, Adios Golf Club, Oak Tree National, Under Armour, Adidas, Asics, Browning Guns, John Deere.
The logo should be "stand alone" but may be complimented with text reading "Free State Apparel".
