Illustration Design Brief
The illustration will convey how a neighborhood radio watch program, an emergency preparedness program sponsored by Radio Relay Int'l aka "National SOS Radio Network" might work for a local boy scout troop. Attached is a basic attempt to give the gist of it. We are showing how short-range radios, operating roughly with a line-of-sight range, can organize into a "net" to relay messages and extend the practical communication range to summon help or report status from the field.

In this example, roughly patterned after a real troop, the nexus is their cabin high on a hillside. It overlooks a small town in the valley below and can contact the fire company, police station, school, city hall, a farmer on the other side of the valley, and even another scout troop several miles away.

Overlays of this illustration will show various connections following the course of an important message as it is relayed through the radio net.

The artistic style should match the style seen in the attached scans of a well-regarded, classic edition of the boy scout handbook. You will see they convey a sense of adventure giving only enough detail to leave the specifics to the imagination of the viewer. Colors are muted (watercolors?) and exaggerated perspective is used depending on the purpose at hand.

If this initial work project is successful, we may commission others for variations of this program we are designing for other youth and civic groups. We may also with to commission additional illustrations for our planned implementation manual depicting other concepts that lend themselves to visual media.
