Out in Front: COVID Corps is a new podcast that shares the immediate, powerful stories of healthcare workers confronting the health crisis of the century. Hosted by emergency physician Dr. Terry O'Connor, who is just now emerging from his region's first COVID wave, COVID Corps is a place for frontline healthcare workers to vent, grieve, and celebrate. Their stories capture both the specificity and enormity of what clinicians across the U.S. are experiencing.
Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare personnel are bearing intimate witness to this crisis. Emergency rooms are swollen and overrun with the ill. Truck trailers are filled with the deceased. Meanwhile, those on the frontlines watch in disbelief as many citizens carry on, seemingly unaware of the tragedies and victories unfolding everyday.
Out in Front operates in that stark contrast of reality and perception. I hope that listeners on the pandemic's many frontlines - healthcare, food, infrastructure, and on and on - will hear their own experiences reflected in these stories. Healthcare providers in particular can learn from others' experiences and perhaps find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in their fears, frustrations, and concerns. General listeners will be captivated by the stories, told with specificity and detail but not jargon. I hope that all listeners will better understand what happens on the other side of the ER entrance, the expertise and humanity of the caregivers protecting us, and most importantly, what is truly at stake as we weigh our own actions.
I have been planning a podcast about environmental change and public health across the world. I envision this quick-response COVID season as a precursor to an ongoing show about the larger, slower-moving crisis that humanity is facing.
