Logo Design Brief
UPDATE 2/25:
After the first round of ideas we feel there needs to be a bit more creativity and not just a 1:1 execution of the scribble we supplied. The name MOBY WALDEN (in caps or regular) is set, and we like the symbols boat and tree(s)....but everything else is open and can be designed in a new and fresh way, maybe also a bit more retro than the current proposals. We have attached a new file with some inspirations that might help to think out of the box. Elements to consider integrating into the logo are:
- name MOBY WALDEN (font, size, color, placement etc. open)
- an icon that stands for the combination of water (Moby) and woods (Walden)
- Est. 2020 or Est. MMXX or Established MMXX (can be in another font)
- to create a small message in a circle around the logo you can use the following claim (just as an option, no need to include):
Thoughtful goods for great times in water and woods
Hope this helps! Thanks! Mr. Moby and Mrs. Walden!
Hello!
We need a logo design along with identity standards (fonts, colors, icons) for a new brand named Moby Walden. The brand takes reference to the two most famous American novels Moby Dick by Herman Melville and Walden by Henry David Thoreau.
Our mission is to create authentic experiences (podcast, outdoor trips) and purposeful goods (clothing, hats, accessories, backpacks, etc) for memorable times in the outdoors between water and woods. The challenge is to combine the elements of Moby/water/fishing and Walden/woods/mountains into one simple and iconic logo that works across all media as well as printed on the items. There should also be an icon that works without the full name or just with the initials MW to be used in social media and also as alternative printed on certain products such as hats or beanies. Please see some initial ideas and scribbles attached.
The colors used should also support the elements water (ocean, blue, greenish-blue) and forests (moss, greenish-dark) to make it a powerful and authentic new brand in the marketplace. The logo should be simple, visually appealing and speaking to Millennials in the digital native marketplace, but also feel authentic and grounded (in nature).
Ideally we find a designer who can also take the logo design and adapt/execute into web, mobile, social as well as on the items itself and elements like the packaging or a small card/flyer that is included in every shipment. What we need is a simple yet full circle identity incl. logo, colors, and fonts (maybe a unique font like Winc?) that differentiate us from the start and transport our values.
Target Market(s)
Everyone (core target 20-50 years old) who loves the outdoors and wants to reconnect with nature and needs the right stuff to wear be it on the water or in the woods.

Requirements
Must have
- - Logo design, must work in large and small size with MOBY WALDEN text
- How to treat the icon without the full name/logo
- Color scheme
- Recommendation for brand font
- Note: please take the scribble as inspiration but be open to come up with different logo ideas. Though the boat + tree(s) seem to be a great combination, there might be other options and ideas that work even better. Be creative!
Should not have
- - Please do not try to work with a whale icon as this is already used a lot incl. Vineyard Vines. The boat/ship icon seems to be more suited, but there are sure different ways to execute in terms of shape, size and combination with tree(s)...is it one or more trees?
