Illustration Design Brief
Illustration needed of Greek Muse, based on red-figure vase painting (file 5: muse_reading...). Simple line drawing that can be used as watermark. The red-figure pottery painting provided is crude, but the drawing based on it should be refined. This is not a difficult project, but it should be nicely done.
UPDATE
Prompted by questions and reactions so far, here is an update.
- The "Chair"
Don't include it. Some of you have asked about the "chair" in the right lower corner of the picture of the red-figure Muse (I thought it might be a chest with the lid open). Whatever it is, it's not part of the project.
- The "Scroll"
Yes, the scroll is needed. It helps identify the figure as a muse. A lyre or theater mask may serve the same function, but are not appropriate for this project.
- The "Dress"
I'm certainly no expert, but here is what I think the Muse is wearing: A peplos dress and a himation cloak over her right shoulder. I have added some pics that show far more clearly what these actually looked like. This may be useful since the red-figure painting is very crude. Also, I added a stone relief of Pallas Athena wearing a simple peplos dress (tunic) and what I consider to be a successful drawing of this relief (in the style that I am looking for, it's from a book cover). The characteristics of a peplos are:
- fastened with buckles on the shoulders
- belted at the waste to create shape
- made from fine fabric
- the bottom reaches the floor (almost)
The himation is worn over one shoulder and is long, reaching well below the knee (see the pic).
- The "Hair"
The hairstyle is a so-called a "Psyche Knot", and may be adorned with a headband, if you so prefer. Again, see the pics.
EXAMPLE
The British Academy also has a drawing of a Greek Muse on their seal. See the pics. The way the Muse is drawn may serve as an example. (I am not looking for a seal, though. The example is just for the drawing style.)
INSPIRATION and SIMPLICITY
The above information is provided as inspiration only. Please use as you see fit. Artistic license allowed. Keep things simple. A simple peplos, a simple himation, a simple hairdo, a simple scroll, no "chair".
Updates
I would like to thank everyone who entered a design so far, many of which I truly liked. Many of the illustrations were well done but were just not in the style that I am looking for. Today I will "eliminate" those designs, leaving only the ones that I believe show the most promise for the present project. Thank you.
