Logo Design Brief
The Rucker Family Society is a US-based non-profit that is focused on the history and genealogy of Rucker family, beginning with Peter Rucker, who arrived in Virginia in 1700... legend has it that he floated ashore more dead than alive clinging to a keg of rum after his sloop sank seven miles offshore. Probably not entirely true, but we love the story. We're looking for a logo that both captures the historical nature of the organization, as well as the adventurous spirit of our family's patriarch, Peter. We don't currently have a color palette. Our website is http://www.theruckerfamilysociety.org/ Please check out the pictures on the site. Also... there is currently a coat of arms that is being used. Turns out that it belongs to a DIFFERENT Rucker family, one we're not related to. Feel free to use design elements from the coat of arms, but we aren't supposed to use it, since it isn't our family. Also, the Rucker Batteau was a boat designed by family members for use in bringing tobacco to market along the James River in Virginia. It is a motif that could be used in the logo.

The initial feedback from the RFS Board:
No text. Apparently they are looking for a "crest" not a logo.
Try some logos with a 17th century sloop (1680s or so). Possibly sinking? If you feel creative, possibly with a guy in the foreground holding on to a rum barrel while the sloop sinks in the background.

Try not to make it look 'commercial' (Yeah. I don't know what they mean by this either. Probably less polished, a bit more rough around the edges. But in an artistic way. See what you can do.)
