Logo Design Brief
Our progressive, inclusive Christian congregation in Rhode Island, USA, recently affirmed a new Mission Statement: "Following Jesus, we will LOVE FIRST. Love God. Love People. Love the World." With this Mission Statement we affirm that we are followers of Jesus (Christians) who look to model our ministry and our lives on his ethic of love. "LOVE FIRST" is the short hand and primary expression of the fuller mission statement. We want love to define who and how we are, and how we show up in the world. Remembering, "Justice is what love looks like in public" (Cornell West), we seek to translate LOVE FIRST into both personal and public commitments to peace and justice. We believe that many things in organizational life compete for primacy: money, authority structures, history/tradition, etc. . We believe our first priority is love of God, people and the world, for this is how Jesus lived and the mission he gave to his followers, so we want to stress that LOVE FIRST is our mandate.
So many church logos feature their building. And while our physical building is our most noticeable public feature, we want the quality of our relationships and our positive impact on our community to be our most salient features. If the building is part of the logo (to clearly communicate we're a church) it should be secondary. The physical building is white with green shutters. The latter is unusual and sets us apart visually. Our worship space has a distinctive mossy green color. Prior logos and our website have featured green.
Being a progressive Christian community with a clear commitment to inclusion, we display the LGBTQ rainbow prominently within and without our property and our media. As the green (cited above) is not the bright, Kelly Green (primary color rainbow green), integrating a rainbow spectrum but in non-primary spectrum could work.
LOVE FIRST being our central message, a heart shape makes sense but would rather it be stylized than classic heart (symmetrical, red, etc.).
