Logo Design Brief

Organization Overview:
About Actra:
Actra, meaning "Acción Transformadora," is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing crime and violence in Latin America, starting with Colombia. We implement and scale the most cost-effective solutions, specifically through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) programs targeted at at-risk young men. Our approach focuses on empowerment, compassion, and evidence-based methods to transform lives and build safer communities.
Goals:
To reduce crime and violence by providing CBT-informed group programs.
To empower individuals to exert control over their own lives.
To create healthier, wealthier, and happier societies through sustained crime reduction.
Target Audiences:
Primary Audience: Potential partners such as government agencies and local NGOs.
Secondary Audiences:
Potential international and national funders.
Potential participants for our program
Note: We expect potential participants won’t be looking at our website much given their characteristics and (lack of) access to the internet. That being said, we will still have our logo in our uniforms or printed material, so it needs to be appealing to them as well.
Personality and Values:
Compassionate: Emphasizing care and support over punishment.
Empowering: Fostering personal growth and self-control.
Innovative: Utilizing evidence-based, cutting-edge approaches.
Trustworthy: Building credibility through rigorous research and proven effectiveness.
Transformative: Aiming for lasting change in individuals and communities.

Inclusion of Name in Logo:
Please include the full name "Actra" in the logo design.
Note: "Actra" stands for "Acción Transformadora", which means "Transformative Action" in Spanish. We’d like the meaning in Spanish to be in the logo. You may submit different versions of the logo, one without the acronym, one with the acronym, and one with both the acronym and the meaning.
Current working logo:
https://drive.google.com/drive/u/3/folders/1lrxK-W3LfBK5wrcM0GJmicdaD4aA6WsW
We like this one but thing it could be improved or that a whole different concept might suit us better
It’s meant to symbolize leaving the cycle of violence and crime with the circle and the arrow escaping it
We welcome logo inputs that innovate on the current design and still combine a circle or spiral with an arrow, as well as new possibilities
Style Preferences:
Overall Style: Minimalistic, modern, and clean design that is both professional and approachable.
Type: Abstract with clear symbolism related to transformation, growth, collaboration, or positive change.
Tone: Uplifting and hopeful, conveying a sense of progress, trust, and empowerment.
Complexity: Simple enough to be easily recognized and remembered, but with thoughtful details that reflect our mission.
Versatility: Should look good in both color and black-and-white, and be scalable for various mediums.

Color Preferences:
Primary Colors:
Dark Blue (#000e99): Symbolizes trust, wisdom, stability, and professionalism.
Orange (#ff6900): Represents energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and determination.
Notes:
The combination of dark blue and orange should create a vibrant yet professional look, evoking feelings of trust and positive change.
Ensure that the colors complement each other well and maintain legibility in various applications.
Consider using dark blue for primary elements, such as the text or main symbol, and orange as an accent color to highlight key features or add visual interest.
We could potentially change colors if you make a good enough case for it.

Examples of Logos We Like:

https://www.clearsolutions.global/
https://www.healthierhens.com/
https://www.youth-impact.org/
Examples of logos we like less:
https://www.centreforaquacultureprogress.org/ - on the verge of too complex
https://healthlearn.org/ - on the edge of too generic
https://www.fishwelfareinitiative.org/ - we are not that keen on a very explicit illustration like this
https://exploratory-altruism.org/ - aesthetics are a bit too robotic / rigid /square and too dark

Logo Usage:
Variations Needed:
Rectangular Version: Suitable for website headers, letterheads, and banners.
Square Version: Suitable for social media profile pictures (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn).
Backgrounds:
Provide both designs on a light background and a dark background to ensure versatility across different mediums.

Design Elements to Avoid:
Clichés:
Avoid generic symbols like hands holding a heart, shields, or overly used peace symbols.
Violent Imagery:
Do not include weapons, chains, or any imagery associated with violence or aggression.
Literal Representations:
Avoid being too literal (e.g., jail bars, handcuffs). We prefer abstract symbols that subtly convey transformation and empowerment.
Complexity:
Steer clear of intricate designs that do not scale well or are hard to reproduce on different platforms.
Feminine symbols:
Our target participants are young men (14-30), so avoid too feminine symbols. If you want to use e.g. a butterfly to symbolize transformation, make sure it is very abstract and “cool”, not “cute”

Additional Notes:
Typography:
Use clean, modern fonts that are easy to read. Sans-serif fonts are preferred for their clarity and contemporary feel.
Emotion:
The logo should evoke feelings of trust, progress, collaboration, and positive change. Attached are some images for inspiration, although the last 2 are too complex to be good logos we think.
Symbolism brainstorm:
Here are some symbols that we generated in our own brainstorm and that both cofounders like in principle. Feel free to add additional symbols that we may not have come up with.
Spiral or Circle – Often signifies cycles, continuous improvement, or harmony; a spiral can also represent personal or collective growth.
Rising Sun – Evokes new beginnings, hope, and positive change, marking the start of something bright.
Path or Road – A road or winding path signifies a journey toward change, progress, or reaching new milestones.
Steps or Ladder – Represents gradual growth, development, and reaching upward.
Seedling or Sprout – A symbol of new beginnings, growth, and potential.
Phoenix – An emblem of rebirth and transformation, the phoenix rises from the ashes, symbolizing overcoming obstacles and change.
Water Ripples – Represents small actions leading to bigger impacts, like the ripple effect of positive change.
Arrow – Symbolizes movement, direction, and forward progress. Multiple arrows or circular arrows can indicate transformation or continuous action.
Flame – Represents passion, intensity, and the power to ignite change. A flame suggests transformative action and energy.
Wings – Suggests freedom, taking action, and transcending limits, symbolizing transformative movement.
Open Door or Pathway – Implies taking the first step toward change, as well as opportunity and action.
Bridge – Symbolizes connection, forward movement, and the active step of bridging gaps or creating change.

We look forward to seeing a creative interpretation of our mission through your design. Thank you for your effort in helping us create a logo that embodies the spirit and goals of Actra.
