Logo Design Brief

The Handhills Classic, established in 2000, requires a primary logo that represents a heritage motorcycle rally rooted in preservation, camaraderie, and authentic vintage riding culture — not modern sport motorcycling. The design must feel timeless and traditional, evoking pre-1970s engineering, craftsmanship, and mechanical character rather than speed, aggression, or racing performance.

The rally celebrates motorcycles of earlier eras:
1975 and older — 305cc & under
1959 and older — 500cc & under
1945 and older — any displacement

Participants are enthusiasts who restore, maintain, and ride historic machines. The event is intentionally welcoming to all skill levels and focuses on shared appreciation rather than competition. The logo should therefore feel warm, classic, and community-oriented rather than extreme or high-energy.

Design Intent

The mark should visually communicate:
- Heritage
- Pre-war and mid-century industrial design influence
- Mechanical honesty and craftsmanship
- Period-appropriate typography (not modern sans-serif or racing fonts)

Authenticity

- Feels like it could have existed in the 1930s–1960s
- Inspired by vintage manufacturer badges, tank emblems, rally plaques, and enamel signs
- Avoid modern motorcycle culture aesthetics (sportbike, skulls, flames, aggressive imagery)

Community

- Friendly gathering of like-minded riders
- Adventure and countryside riding rather than competition
- Nostalgia and tradition

Practical Requirements

- The logo must function in multiple real-world applications:

Small-scale use
- Etching/engraving on metal
- Pins, badges, and small merchandise
- Must remain legible in single-color form

Large-scale use
- Step-and-repeat backdrops
- Apparel
- Signage

Because of this, the design should:

- Avoid fine detail and heavy shading
- Avoid photographic or overly illustrative elements
- Work clearly in 1-color and 2-color versions
- Be instantly recognizable as a silhouette or stamp

Anniversary Consideration

- The 25th Anniversary is important but should not define the logo.
- Create a core logo that works permanently.

Then incorporate the anniversary as a removable element (banner, ribbon, date mark, or secondary lockup). The event should be able to use the same primary mark for future years simply by removing the anniversary notation.

Visual Style Direction

Think along the lines of:
- Vintage rally plaques
- Old motorcycle tank badges
- British and European heritage branding
- Mid-century enamel signage
- Classic touring club emblems

The logo should feel collectible — something riders would proudly engrave on metal or stitch onto a jacket.

Overall Goal

Create a logo that looks like it belongs to a historic motorcycle tradition — not just a one-time event — and could realistically still be in use 50 years from now.

It should feel authentic, mechanical, and enduring.
