Logo Design Brief

About the business
Beck Civil Engineering is a civil engineering consulting firm based in Lincoln, California. Today, our work is primarily for public agencies (counties and cities) on roads, bridges, and water resources (drainage, hydrology, and stormwater). We are expanding into land surveying and into private-sector work, including site planning and land development for developers, builders, and landowners. We need a logo that works for both audiences: a county public works director and a private developer should each see a firm they'd trust with a complex project.

Why we're updating the logo
The current logo (attached) was made quickly when the business focused on residential design. It combines rooftop shapes with a stream running through mountains, reflecting the residential work and my master's degree in water resources. The business has grown well beyond that, and the current logo reads as a small residential design shop. I want a logo that fits where the business is now and where it's going.

What to keep

The water and landscape idea is meaningful to me. A subtle nod to it is welcome and fits the land and water side of our work, but it shouldn't be the whole concept.
Please drop the rooftop and house imagery.

Direction and ideas (suggestions, not requirements)

Themes that span our work: land, terrain, water, and infrastructure. Examples include contour lines, a watershed or flow pattern, an alignment or road curving through terrain, or structural lines combined with natural forms.
Something simple and geometric that feels engineered rather than illustrated.
An abstract mark or a monogram using the initials [XX] is fine if it's distinctive.
Please keep the concept broad. It should not be so literal (a bridge only, a road only, a single water drop) that it excludes land development, site design, or surveying.

Future growth
Over the next few years we plan to add land surveying and expand into site planning and land development work for private clients. The logo should feel at home on a public works proposal and on a developer's site plan package, and should not need to change as services are added. Please do not include imagery specific to any one service, such as a transit or tripod for surveying, or buildings or lots for development.

Style

Professional, clean, and confident, like an established firm that both public agencies and developers would trust with a major project.
Credible and institutional, but not stiff or "government." Approachable and modern enough to appeal to private clients.
Modern but not trendy, so it holds up for 10+ years.
Avoid clip-art looks, heavy gradients, and fine detail that disappears when small.
Avoid a glossy real estate or developer-marketing look.
Colors: [preferences, e.g., do like the current soft blue and gray/green earth tones]. Open to suggestions, but the logo must work in one color and in black and white.

Where it will be used
Proposals and statements of qualifications (SOQs), plan sheet title blocks and stamps/drawings, site plans and entitlement or permit submittals, developer proposals and presentations, business cards and letterhead, email signatures, a website, and truck or field signage. It needs to be legible at very small sizes, such as in a title block, and reproduce cleanly in black and white.

Deliverables

Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) and PNG/PDF versions
Horizontal and stacked layouts, plus an icon-only version
Full color, one-color, and reversed (white on dark) versions

What to avoid

Generic engineering clichés (hard hats, gears, compasses)
Anything that looks like a construction contractor rather than an engineering consultant
Residential or house imagery
Imagery that ties the firm to only one service or one type of client
