T-shirt Design Brief

Project Overview

I’m building a niche Minnesota lifestyle apparel brand centered around the humor, traditions, and culture of everyday Minnesotans.

One of my current bestselling sweatshirts features the phrase “IT ONLY TAKES ONE” alongside an illustration of Minnesota pull-tab gambling tickets.

The existing design has already generated sales, but I’m looking for a professional designer to elevate it into something more distinctive, polished, and visually appealing.

I want something that looks like it belongs in an established independent clothing brand—not a generic print-on-demand design.

Design Concept

Required text: “IT ONLY TAKES ONE”

This is a familiar saying among Minnesota pull-tab players, referring to the idea that one ticket could be a winner.

The design should incorporate recognizable Minnesota-style pull-tab tickets.

I’m open to creative interpretations of the overall composition, lettering, and illustration style, provided the pull-tab imagery is accurate.

The finished design should feel clever, authentic, and effortlessly cool. Something someone would genuinely want to wear to a local bar, on the lake, or just hanging out.

Desired Style

* Vintage-inspired, with a subtle retro or nostalgic feel.
* Bold, distinctive typography with personality.
* Custom illustrations that feel professionally drawn.
* Simple enough to look great on a sweatshirt without feeling plain or unfinished.
* A cohesive composition where the text and illustration complement each other.
* Unisex and casual, rather than overly masculine or feminine.
* A small amount of texture or character is welcome, but avoid excessive distressing or tiny details.

I’m especially interested in designers who understand vintage apparel graphics, custom typography, and thoughtful composition.

The goal is not to make the design more complicated. It’s to make it more intentional and memorable.

Important: Pull-Tab Accuracy

Please refer to the attached images of actual Minnesota pull-tab tickets.

The tickets should be recognizable to people who regularly play pull tabs.

* Traditional tickets are vertically rectangular.
* Each ticket has three rectangular sections that open to the left, like pages of a book.
* Each opened section reveals three symbols.
* Symbols can include deer, fish, boats, pine trees, or other simple Minnesota-related imagery.
* Tickets may be illustrated individually, overlapping, or in a small casually scattered pile.
* Avoid making the tickets resemble scratch-off lottery cards or slot machines.

Please prioritize realistic ticket construction and proportions over unnecessary decorative details.

Typography and Layout

The phrase “IT ONLY TAKES ONE” must be clearly legible.

My existing design uses curved text above overlapping pull-tab tickets. However, you do not need to follow this layout.

I’m interested in seeing more creative compositions, custom lettering, and ways of integrating the text with the illustration.

The design should have enough visual impact to look good on a sweatshirt without becoming overly busy.

Colors and Printing

The design will primarily be printed on sweatshirts using direct-to-garment (DTG) printing.

* Initial sweatshirt color: light heather gray.
* Prefer a limited, cohesive color palette.
* Dark charcoal, black, muted vintage tones, and restrained accent colors are welcome.
* Avoid gradients, extremely fine lines, or intricate details that may not print clearly.
* The design should look good at typical adult sweatshirt chest-print sizes.

What to Avoid

* Generic clip art or obvious AI-generated artwork.
* Excessive decorative elements, stars, banners, or unrelated graphics.
* Overly busy designs.
* Generic tourist-souvenir aesthetics.
* Incorrect pull-tab construction.
* Thin, delicate lettering or details that may disappear when printed.
* Designs that look like a basic phrase and an unrelated image placed underneath it.
* Using pull tab game names, serial numbers, or exact symbols that may be copyrighted.

Deliverables

Please provide:

* Original editable vector artwork (AI, EPS, or SVG).
* High-resolution PNG with a transparent background.
* A version suitable for printing on light-colored apparel.
* All fonts outlined or otherwise properly licensed for commercial use.
* Commercial usage rights for the final selected design.

Reference Images

I will attach:

1. My existing bestselling sweatshirt design to show the original concept.
2. Photos of real Minnesota pull-tab tickets for accuracy.

The current design is a reference point, not something that needs to be copied exactly.

I’m looking for a designer who can take an already successful concept and make it feel like a signature piece from a recognizable clothing brand.
