Illustration Design Brief

We need a cartoon-style illustration for the cover of a book called “Confessions of ethical investing = one woman’s journey”.

The initial print run will be 1000 copies.

Your name will be credited on the imprint page but not on the cover.

The author would like the cover to be bright and colourful and reminiscent of hippie style. The colour may be included in the illustration itself - OR - the illustration may be mono with a colourful background. The target market for the book is 40-60 year olds with a slight skew towards women.

The size of the front cover is 156mm(w) x 234mm(h). If your illustration extends to the edge of the book you need to allow 5mm bleed on all sides.
Allow a 13mm internal safety margin on all sides. Critical elements must be within this margin, background elements may extend beyond.

Title and author details will be added to the book cover, so the key elements of the illustration should really only take up about half the depth of the cover.

ILLUSTRATION MUST HAVES
The subject of the illustration is an obviously hippie man with long hair, optional beard or side burns and John Lennon style glasses. (Think flower power, rather than psychedelic.) He MUST be sitting on a 3-legged stool. He will be looking at, or pointing to, a graph that shows a generally upward trend (refer to sample file).

OPTIONAL ELEMENTS
You may like to sit the graph in an old-fashioned projector screen with a stand (refer to sample file) and you may like to include a view of the overhead projector itself (refer to sample file). Remember that these elements, if included) must suit the 60s-80s timeframe not be modern technology.

THE GRAPH
The graph must show two lines Blue = Us, Red = Them, with a generally upward trend but with some peaks and troughs. Use the sample attached as a rough guide. The timeline would be 2001-2014. No other wording needs to be legible. The intent is to show that over time the blue line slightly out performs the red line. It can be quite simple in styling.

STYLE
We are quite open to your interpretation of the illustration style. We would like it cartoon-like and a bit of fun. I don’t think it needs to be overly detailed and it can be quite loose and free. Shading or colouring can be included as per your style.
