Logo Design Brief

We have a product that is going to go world wide and needs snappy catchy logo with Optima in it. I also need a catch phrase.

We also have three other products that we will be launching in next couple weeks that will need logos as well.

"OPTIMA" All Natural Essential Honey Bee Food Supplement

Use as a feeding stimulant for late winter, early spring and during dearths of nectar.

Use to help build up packages, nucs and swarms.

Helps calm bees when used as a spray.

Spraying bees helps prevent fighting when combining nucs, swarms and colonies.

When sprayed on new wax or plastic foundation helps encourage the bees to draw out the new foundation.

For less than 1/2 Euro per treatment, many commercial beekeepers are using "OPTIMA" as a cost-effective way to keep their colonies strong and vigorous.

When added to a candy or patty mixture, helps encourage a more rapid consumption along with the added benefits of "OPTIMA".

Note: Some commercial beekeepers have reported that 1 – 2 teaspoons of "OPTIMA" per quart of candy or patty mixture seems to work well. Adjustments may be required to optimize consumption. "OPTIMA" is an all natural essential oils composition that has proven over many years and many millions of feedings to be very effective in promoting the health and vigor of the honey bee as well as being effective for PMS (parasitic mite syndrome) in honey bees.

Using "OPTIMA" to feed and/or treat honey bees -
• We add 1 teaspoonful (ca 5 ml) to a quart of 1:1 sugar syrup in order to stimulate brood rearing, pollen collection and to initiate early spring development in honey bee colonies. We start feeding in mid-February and continue until the bees have nectar coming in and they begin to stop feeding.
• We add 2 teaspoonfuls (ca 10 ml) to a quart of 1:1 sugar syrup in order to improve the health of the colony, in cases of dysentery, PMS, chalk brood or other ailments. The stronger dose of spearmint and lemongrass oils seems to give the honey bee brood and adult’s greater tolerance or resistance to the ailments.
• We add 4 teaspoonfuls (ca 20 ml) to a quart of 1:1 sugar syrup when we introduce queens, treat with formic acid or cause other disruptive disturbances to the hive. This is particularly useful for queen introduction (especially for queens with low genetic relationship as Russian Queens) and for reducing defensive behavior in particularly defensive colonies. We shake (drench) or spray syrup onto the brood frames and onto the queen cage before releasing the queen. We seldom lose queens when this method is used.
• We apply some syrup to our skin in order to reduce stinging behavior; when the tarsi touch the syrup, the bees fly off instead of stinging.
• We add about 20% to 85-100 ml of 50% formic acid during fumigation of brood chambers for varroa and tracheal mite control.
• We apply the stronger syrups to two colonies when combining them, in order to reduce defensive behavior of the workers.
New! Some commercial beekeepers have been using a new method of applying "OPTIMA" calling it the “Drench” or “Dousing” method. They use one-gallon (some even more) of "OPTIMA" per 55 gallons (four teaspoons per quart) in 1:1 sugar syrup, applying one-cup (8oz. more or less depending on the size of the colony; 3 - 4oz. on a nuc) of the mix to the brood area by spraying or drizzling the mix on the bees and between the brood frames. They use this force-feeding method three to four times, three to four days apart on failing colonies. Some beekeepers drench the brood box each time they enter the colony throughout the year to save labor. Also, some beekeepers are using the 1-pint per 55-gallon syrup dose instead of the quart dose on healthy colonies, calling it the “maintenance dose”, when they do their regular syrup feedings.

A number of Canadian beekeepers recently reported they drench each time they re-fill the feeding jars and have reduced their winter losses from 40% or more down to 8% or less. They also mentioned the yearly cost for feeding and drenches of "OPTIMA" are less than the price for a pound of honey and the bees are so strong in the spring they make up to an extra two supers (50 pounds) of honey.
"OPTIMA" concentrate can be mixed in syrup solutions ahead of time and kept in tightly sealed containers and fed when needed. To insure even distribution of essential oils after lengthy storage, mix or stir before applying to hive feeders.

REMEMBER, DO NOT FEED OR DRENCH WITH HONEY SUPERS ON.
Feeding "OPTIMA" can cause robbing during times of extreme dearth of nectar, especially during the fall. If this occurs we suggest feeding during evening within the hive and reducing the entrance to prevent robbers from entering.

Designs look pretty good so far.  Since this product is all natural and no chemicals, it is important to have a balance between the clinical and simplistic design.  The average customer is a simple European bee farmer that will have limited English skills so we need to communicate in the logo - clean - natural -effective.  I know this is a tall order just in the logo but that is what will drive my decision.  Also, we will be looking for perhaps three more logos in the near future on other products we will be introducing to the same customer base.
Thanks for all your hard work.

Dr. Joe

We prefer the yellow colours along with the black.  They seem to stand out better and as this is for honey bees, I believe they work better.  Thank you for all the creative options given so far.  We are definitively pleased and wished we could choose three different logos but that would not work for one product.

Dr. Joe

We are VERY PLEASED with the submissions received to date.  I will definitely use this service again.

We like the bold black and yellow designs.  We think they will look good on a product label as well as on a small business card.

I would like to actually use a couple of the designs but that is not good business in the product world.  We will be sending the ideas to our executive group and to a focus group for final choice.  Much thanks to all participants.  Great work!

Thank you to all of you designers.

I definitely prefer the blackish and yellowish simple designs.  Clarity at a distance is a must along with brand identity.  The choice will be made very shortly after the project closes in a few hours.  The logo will need to be clear and recognizable on a package, sign, as well as on a business card so the simpler ones seem to stand out to me.

I will open project for I.P.M. patties soon.  I.P.M. stands for Integrated Pest Management.  An all natural product placed into the beehive to help promote the health and vigor as well as the hygienic behavior of the honey bees.  It is an essential oils based package mixed into two types of sugars and vegetable shortening - Crisco in America - shaped into the size of a hamburger patty and placed into the hive.  We can not claim medicinal properties or else we fall into the USDA and FDA government regulations.

Thanks again.
