Poster Design Brief

We need a poster designed for our feature documentary called Angel of Nanjing, about Chen Si, a man who for the past 10 years, has volunteered to patrol the Yangze River Bridge in Nanjing, China, saving the lives of those who come to throw themselves into the murky waters below.

The story follows Chen as he struggles to balance his job, his family life, and his own demons, all while taking on the responsibility to save others on the bridge.

To this day, he has saved over 250 people.

It's a very serious film, so the look should be very minimalist and sleek. Film title could have an asian feel but not cliche.. and does't have to have a Chinese look to it. You could look at Chinese stamps for inspiration on that. But we are open to anything.

Project Deadline Extended

Please, note to all... The Chinese characters must have a brush stroke looking font. The boxy look is too industrial looking, and I can't paste the correct look into the instruction. There are many free, nice looking brushstroke fonts out there. Also, I was just informed that, 天使在南京 is a better title... it's just swapping the two words and changing the particle in the middle.

Hey guys, We just held a vote... and me and my partner are trying to make our decision soon. But just so you know, we will be looking for someone to design the website for the film. So, if you are also into web design, please hold on to your elements... we will be posting another design crowd contest soon.

Requirements
Must have
  • The bridge and Mr. Chen. How ever those are blended together, as long as it isn't too busy. (Man on wire is a fantastic minimalistic poster... but ours could have a bit more going on...) maybe even two scenes separated by the text in the middle. See what works.

Muted colors... look at the posters for "last train home" and "up the yangze" to know the feeling and/or style we like.
Nice to have
  • I think a play on the colors red, black, and grey will work best here... Using the sky as the backdrop for the title.

the co-directors names are Frank L. Ferendo and Jordan Horowitz.... they could be at the bottom. There are others involved, so you could have filler names for now.

There is a tag line from the film, that could be used "If you step back, there is always a bigger space for you." If used, I wouldn't want it so prominent. I would want it very subtle, if used at all.

And the title in chinese is 南京的天使.... you can incorporate it, it it looks nice.
Should not have
  • too much going on.
