Logo Design Brief

Alter Ego Productions is a newly established video game and animation production company based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Our main activity will be mostly developing games for hardcore gamers, and some casual games. Types of games include (but are not limited to) action, strategy, adventure and JRPG games.

We will also have animation projects that vary from small flash animations to animated TV shows.

Our slogan is "Unleash the hero within you", and that's because we will be targeting our community members, encouraging them to participate in sharing their ideas with the possibility of becoming stars in our games.

We need a logo that represents both our company and our passion for this line of work. This logo must be aggresive and powerful, and is meant to get people's attention.

The logo should be one of the following:
1- A guy putting on a mask, half-mask, helmet or visor
2- A superhero putting on a mask, half-mask, helmet or visor
3- A superhero

The idea behind putting on the mask is to show that any person can put on a mask, gain potential and power, and achieve something that he usually wouldnt be able to achieve.

Logo Style should be either of the following:
1- superhero comic style
2- manga style

The logo should look more on the serious side and must not contain a goofy look and feel. It can either be solid or ink strokes (street fighter 4 style). Keep in mind that this logo will be on the splash screen of every game or animation project that we create in addition to being on our website.

Colors of choice can be one of the following:
1- Orange and white or Orange and black
2- Red, white and black
3- Green (between normal green and lime green), black and white

Dear designers,

I have been getting a lot of requests to commit the project, and it has reached an extent where some of you aren't willing to participate. I understand, and therefore I committed the project now. In return I have a request that each and every one of you must follow. PLEASE read my project brief carefully before submitting your design. Do not bother with making stock logos for me because they won't be accepted, regardless of how good they look. And when you submit a design, please include the description of your concept.

The only reason why I'm actually committing the project is because I am confident that there are a few artists who are coming up (or already came up) with designs that I might be choosing. Those designers clearly read my project brief and submitted logos that are actually in line with what I want.

Designers.... It's time to step your game up!

It's day 5 right now and we're already at 134 designs, and that is a number that I never expected to see. I got designs from people who have good ideas but poor drawing skills, designs from people who can draw so well but have zero creativity, designs from people who have neither creativity nor skills (and frankly speaking I have no idea how they think they stand a chance at winning, but I'm here to provide feedback either way), and designs from people who are creative and can draw well.

What's funny is that I STILL RECEIVE SUBMISSIONS FROM PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T READ THE PROJECT BRIEF!! And I must say that it's starting to get on my nerves. Therefore I would like to make it clear to everyone that from today, ALL SUBMISSIONS THAT DON'T MEET THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED IN THE PROJECT BRIEF WILL BE DELETED AND ASKED TO NEVER SUBMIT AGAIN!!

That's right. I no longer want to see stock logos. No more text only logos. And certainly, NO PLAGIARIZING! To those who attempted to copy other logos or characters, please don't insult my intelligence. I'm not some idiot with lots of money and no brain. If you think that you can get away with making a character who looks exactly like Vegeta from Dragonball Z, or a character with Sasuke's (from Naruto) hairstyle, or COPYING AND PASTING Viewtiful Joe onto a logo, then consider yourself out of the contest. Your logo will be rejected, and you will be asked to take your lack of creativity elsewhere...

Anyway...

I must say that a handful of you are awesome. Not only that you guys have given me brilliant designs, but you made it clear that you guys want to design Alter Ego's logo because you find the project challenging and exciting. I feel that it has no longer become about the money, but about your pride as an artist. I keep getting messages like "this is MY project", or "I HAVE to win this contest because I'm the best at this stuff!", and that really gets me excited! It's like you guys are living examples of the spirit of Alter Ego. All of you are unleashing the hero within :D

So my advice to the rest of the designers is: if you are in this contest for the money only, trust me, you won't win. And that's because your intentions are reflected in your designs. So far all my favorite designs carry their artists' personalities and egos, and they are COOL. AS. HELL.

Right now it got tough to make a decision. I feel like it's wrong to have only one winner because you guys tried so hard to give me these awesome designs. So I decided to add a 2nd and 3rd place prizes as well. I still think it won't do enough justice for you guys, but unfortunately I have a limited budget for this project.

Here's to hoping that you impress me further...

I can see that some people are still submitting without understanding the project brief. Guys, please, this is your last chance otherwise I'm going to stop you from further submissions.


*sigh* and what's worse is that I'm still getting copyright ripoff designs. So it is at this point that I'm putting my foot down and saying "if you submit copyrighted materials that don't belong to you, then I'm going to report you to DesignCrowd and have them deal with you."

We've reached 200 submissions! Wow!

Many of these submissions are great and making it difficult for me to choose a winner. I noticed that the submissions are slowing down now, so I advise designers to look at quality over quantity. Take your time to design the ultimate logo and submit it after you're 100% sure that it's a winning design, even if it takes days. There's still time left :)

Alright designers, listen up, I have an important announcement to make.


As you are aware, we have one week left on this logo design contest, and I have to say that I'm so shocked at the fact that we're above 200 designs. It's safe to say that half of these 100 designs were great designs, which makes it hard for me to decide who's going to win. So I had to narrow down the list to 6 designers (and I won't say who these designers are).

However, I will say this... You will know that you are one of these 6 designers if you receive a message from me asking you for a portfolio, and a few strange requests like "change this and that" or "draw this character from a different angle". If you haven't received that message from me yet, don't worry, you might receive it later today, or perhaps tomorrow.

I know that sounds like extra work, but believe me, there's a good reason behind it. By showing me your portfolio and drawing what I'm going to request from you, you're going to give me an idea about how far your skills can go. You see, the winner of this contest will not only be the proud designer of Alter Ego's logo, but will also work exclusively with Alter Ego on other projects. Meaning: this is the first of many projects to come! 

So let me summarize everything I just said in a different way. There are 6 designs tied in first place, and the winner will be the designer who can show me that he/she can draw the character he/she presented from different angles. And that's because I want to make sure that this designer will have the necessary skill to draw Alter Ego's mascot doing different poses in the future ;)

So stay tuned. Honestly, I think every one of you is a winner.... Except for the idiots who plagiarized copyrighted materials :D
But the point is that even though 3 will win, I'll be glad to post an update thanking every single designer who submitted a great design, and I'll be linking you with their profiles so everyone can see how talented they are. 

So yeah... Good job everyone, and please wait for our decision. I must say that this is a very tough decision to make, and I wish that we can have 10 winners instead of just 3.

Ok, the results are in!


I would like to start by saying that this logo was selected based on a voting process that took place. It was done by Alter Ego stakeholders and partners, along with the some of our community members. Furthermore, we graded the top designers based on the following: the character's appearance and how well the designer can draw it from different angles/poses, use of colors and fonts, the structure of the logo, how aggressive the logo is, the creativity of the logo, how professional it looks (artistic vs corporate), the different uses of the logo (as a mascot for events), how the logo represents our vision, and last but not least, the designer's ability to communicate well with us (this is necessary because the winners of this contest will continue working with us in the future).

The winners are...

1st Place: Art Tank, who gave us a logo that serves as an aggressive brand while looking good on a business card. The character looks wild yet heroic, and can be perfectly used as a mascot!

2nd Place: Laura D, a very talented designer, who gave us a logo that we never expected to see in this contest. A truly creative and unique noir-like anti-hero concept. 

3rd Place: Eko, who submitted over 30 designs, and every single one of them was awesome. His helmet and suit designs in the latest submissions were FLAWLESS.

4th Place: Steve Steeles. I know 4th place gets nothing, but I want everyone to see Steve's designs. His logo packs quite a punch and pretty much describes the Alter Ego community! His design will not go to waste, as we'll definitely be using it for t-shirts and hoodies with his permission! :D

Alter Ego will definitely stay in touch with these four artists for future projects ;)
