My firm needs a more professional looking logo than what we are using currently. I have attached our current logo (logo2finalcopy.jpg). We like the current imagery of the logo, as decribed below, but it is a little too complicated to put on letterhead, etc.
Our current logo is a combination of two images: a DNA helix and the iconic picture of the New York Central Building.
The incorporation of the DNA helix is meant to capture that we are focused in investments in the biotechnology sector (many images are available on the internet if you search "DNA helix" to give you a better idea and explanation).
The incorporation of the New York Central Building is taken from an iconic poster that I have attached (New-York-Central...jpg)). The New York Central Building, now called The Helmsley Building, is iconic as it was referred to being "At the gateway to a continent" because it marked where all of the newly constructed railroads connected the East Coast and the rest of the US in the 1930s. You can learn more about the New York Central Building here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmsley_Building
http://www.thecityreview.com/helmsley.html
The incorporation of the pyramidal top of the New York Central Building is meant to signify that our firm is the "gateway to the new world of biotechnology". The idea our firm is trying to convey is that we are the gateway to the risk and reward of the biotechnology industry just as the New York Central building was the gateway to the rest of the US via the newly built railway system.
PLEASE ADHERE TO THE PRINCIPLES OF GOOD LOGO DESIGN (http://www.logobird.com/the-principles-of-good-logo-design/)
Yes, there is a trade-off between simplicity and the imagery that we are requesting. It your job as the designer to try to find the right balance.
Thank you!
Updates
I wanted to add that if you believe you have a great idea that does not use the exact same imagery as our old logo, but makes the logo better using the principles of logo design (simple, memorable, timeless, versatile, appropriate) while staying consistent with our firm's message, we will certainly consider those submissions.
